This means that a relatively large number of fibers are handled in the distribution cabinet. But the infrastructure management itself is improved because everything can be operated from one location. In order to maintain the philosophy of structured cabling, it is recommended to terminate the vertical and horizontal fiber optic cables separately from each other in a connection box and then to connect them with a patch cord only when placing in service. The segmentation allows a high degree of flexibility during installation and allows the use of connection cables which are optimally aligned, in terms of specifications to the installation segment. By designing clearly separate segments, measurement points are created and each segment can be individually measured, documented and managed. A collapsed backbone structure not only optimizes administration, but is also secure in the future because only with a few patching actions s a point-to-point (P2P) structure is created. Terminal outlet Connection possibilities at the work area Active CP The second version corresponds to the principle of an active consolidation point. Here the fiber of the horizontal cabling is terminated in an universal connection box (U-Box). The U-Box also serves as a zone cabling distributor. This means that copper twisted pair Cable lead from the U-Box to RJ45 outlets on the desk or on the wall. The ONT is mounted near or even on the U-Box not directly accessible to the operator. Patch Cord from the ONT to the U-Box then activate the appropriate RJ45 connection. Standard Of the countless variations three possibilities are described below as a basis, for discussion. The first version, called standard, terminates the horizontal cable in a Fiber Optic outlet. The ONT that is located on or under the table is connected by means of a FO Patch Cord. In this application the Patch Cord is exposed to rough office environment and manipulation. R&M recommend using ruggedized Patch Cord for this connection. Multi-user Outlet A further version is the use of a multi-user outlet. In this version, the multi-user outlet is placed in the center of several work areas to be connected to the ONTs in the sense of a passive consolidation point. The individual horizontal connection Cable are routed in the same duct from the floor distributor to the multi-user outlet. The surrounding ONTs are then connected with ruggedized Patch Cord.

This means that only a few fibers are needed in the backbone, which in turn makes the installation of the vertical cabling relatively simple. The individual working areas are serviced by a defined horizontal cabling system. The splitters located in the floor or zone distribution point connect the vertical and horizontal cabling. They are placed either in boxes for wall mounting, or in 19 "panels, which are mounted in small cabinets. With this structure, the installation is divided into clearly separated segments and can be individually built and tested. The two different cabling sections can therefore be built in-dependently and in parallel. Distributed splitting allows for optimal use of the installation material and thus optimizes material costs. POL usage Passive Optical Network is an effective solution for telecommunication due its simple consolidation of different communication protocols into a single network architecture. Due to multiplication factor inherent to the passive optical splitting POL is best suited for major or extensive LAN installations with large numbers of work places with moderate bandwidth requirements. Also POL is well suited in situations where due to its extended transmission distance it can reach small clusters of several applications that are spaced some distance apart. Examples for this include Hotels and Campus environments. Another beauty of POL is the media continuation from public to the privately owned network. This opens up new possibilities for service providers to reach end users directly within buildings such as shopping malls for instance. Installing a POL infrastructure is also very useful in situations with limited space for cabling runs or floor distributors where the advantages of the fiber optic cable can be used to its best advantage. 4. Passive Optical LAN (POL) Introduction Introduction Structured Cabling is an investment for the future. Demands on the performance of communication networks have grown rapidly, and this trend shows no signs of stopping. On average, LAN cabling solutions remain in operation for decades. This means that requirements for future applications must be assessed and taken into account right from the initial planning phase onwards. R&M already has the right answer here. POL brings the LAN up to light speed. It uses fiber optic cable instead of copper in the horizontal cabling and the Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) transmission protocol. GPON is used to deliver commercial and mission critical broadband services to millions of users worldwide. Passive Optical LAN (POL) is an enterprise network using technology that has been developed for fiber optic access networks. With the use of Passive Optical Network (PON) technology within the Local Area Network (LAN) environment, it is basically a privately owned FTTX system. This results resulting in PON-specific design rules and topologies (1 to n distribution by optical splitters) to distribute all building ICT services over a single infrastructure throughout an enterprise. 10. 4 2 3 1 5 6 Structured Cabling Structured cabling is based on a uniform set-up plan for a future- oriented and application-independent network infrastructure on which different services are transmitted. The network infrastructure is based on a generic cabling, which takes into account the needs of several years, provides reserves for future expansions and can be used independent of applications. Structured cabling provides many benefits, which cannot be dismissed out of hand. An important advantage is the unique segmentation in vertical and horizontal sections. This in turn allows for sequential planning and execution. Thus, responsibilities can be separated and assigned to specific installation teams for execution. The two segments are physically separated in the floor distributor. Only with such a structure it is possible to check and document the individual segments correctly. In the classical structured cabling version, the backbone multimode fiber optic cable are used for the vertical cabling to feed the Ethernet switches in the floor distributors. From then on symmetrical twisted pair cable are used for the cabling to the outlet. It should be noted that the horizontal cabling with twisted pair cable is subject to certain length restrictions. In order to meet the standards and to maximize the benefits, Passive Optical LAN network infrastructures are implemented according to the guidelines for structured cabling. Also for POL, the cabling is divided into primary, secondary and tertiary areas. In accordance to the standards, R&M has defined a total of 6 functional segments: 1. Building distributor 2. Terminal outlet In many cases it is forgotten that the cabling standards have been designed for a lifetime of 10–15 years. The standards (ISO, EN, TIA) provide at least 2 connections per workplace area to ensure a sufficient supply of connections. The appropriate port is then activated if required. The structured cabling approach has proven its value in millions of office installations all over the world. Based on its huge experience in LAN cabling, R&M has designed a POL system that uses the same principles as the structured cabling. This way the POL system is optimally suited for the future demands in an office building, being ready for moves, additions and changes as they occur. IT & Data Server Centralized Management and Provisioning O LT ONT Optical Splitter Core Switch ISP Provider WAP End User Telephone End User Passive Optical LAN (POL) Passive Optical LAN infrastructure incorporates singlemode fiber cables, its distribution infrastructure, passive (non-powered) optical splitters and two main active electronic components. An optical line terminal (OLT), the main switch typically resides in the data center or equipment room, and an optical network termination (ONT) that ensures a proper communication to and from the end user equipment. The fiber cable and passive equipment between the OLT and ONT are often simply referred to as the optical distribution network (ODN). Typically, up to 32 optical network units (ONTs) at the work area can be connected to a single transceiver port in the optical line terminal (OLT) by the use of optical 1:n splitters. The OLT acts as the main switch for the building and connects the LAN to the Data Center and the Internet trough the optical backbone and provider network. OLTs also provide redundant switching, control and power capabilities. The ONT serves as the end user interface to the network. It converts the optical signal into an electrical and then distributes the signal via twisted pair data cable to a variety of internet protocol enabled devices, such as computers, wireless access points (WAPs) and Voice-over-IP (VoIP) phones. Why Passive Optical LAN? With savings in both capital and operating expenditure, POL offers considerable reduced capital expenses in the total cost of ownership. Simply because of this POL must not be ignored and should always be a consideration. An all-fiber POL installation can achieve cost savings of up to 30 – 50 percent in the passive infrastructure, depending on size, on the level of operational comfort and on the amount of redundancy in your LAN. Thus a POL network may make sense as an upgrade to a predominantly copper based environment. A further advantage is that POL requires a smaller cabling infrastructure footprint. It moves the access layer electronics towards to the work area, so there is no need for centralized access switches within floor distributors. Hence it has the potential to reduce or even eliminate the need for floor distributors, which in turn frees up floor space for additional working stations. In addition smaller and fewer network elements are needed to build the communication infrastructure and space-saving fiber cable are replacing bulky copper cable bundles. And this will reduce the thermal load as well. Also the use of singlemode fiber increases the life expectancy of the ODN dramatically as with the bandwidth demands growing no cabling infrastructure must be replaced. POL is a proven technology with its roots in the fiber to the home GPON technology so it serves with true carrier grade robustness, reliability and Quality of Service (QoS). Collapsed Backbone Centralized splitting in building distributor 4 2 3 1 5 6 Collapsed Backbone In the POL collapsed backbone configuration all the optical splitters are placed in a central building distributor. Floor distributors are used to separate the segments into vertical and horizontal cabling and are connected directly via a multi-core fiber cable. The individual horizontal connection cable are installed from the floor distributor outwards to the respective outlet. By patching "backbone port on horizontal port" in the floor distributor, a pure point-to-point connection is created over the entire link from the building distributor to the outlet. This means that a relatively considerable number of fibers have to be handled in the building distributior. The collapsed backbone generally has the advantages that all passive network components are placed in a central distribution cabinet and are not widespread in the network. This simplifies network management and maintenance. Further it also enhances security and reliability, thereby ensuring the investment. The Collapsed Backbone topology improves overall performance and allows for more flexible management in terms of routing individual ports because centrally available. Here too clearly separated segments will enable the full advantage of structured cabling. «Collapsed Backbone topology optimizes administration» This allows for sequential planning and execution.
